Richard Hochrainer's Etuden fur Timpani (Etudes for Timpani) includes several studies intended to prepare students for life in the orchestra. Pulling in material from all sorts of famous orchestral timpani parts, this book is excellent lesson material.

The first volume in the series begins with some pretty basic little etudes that use two drums. The difficulty range of this book is quite wide - by the end students will need a hefty understanding of rhythms and excellent technique.

Please note: the traditional German timpani method puts the biggest drum on the right (opposite of what we do in the USA), so all of the suggested stickings are backwards if your big drums are on the left.
